- W109596961 abstract "Masson, J. M. (2001). The Emperor's Embrace: The Evolution of Fatherhood. New York: Washington Square Press. 253 pp. ISBN 0-671-02084-6. Price: $13.95 (paperback). Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson provides a detailed and delightful look at parents, mates, and family units in the animal world with a focus on fathers. Masson cites his previous work and his having become a father a second time, after more than 20 years, as stimulating this book. In his two books When Elephants Weep and Dogs Never Lie About Love, animals are depicted as complex beings capable of feeling, conveying emotions, and bonding with each other and with humans. These declarations form the foundation for the arguments made in this book. Observations by the author of his young son's emotions prompted questions about other animal children and their relationship with their fathers. Just as human fathers have received more attention over the last 30 years, information on other animal fathers has been accumulating from scholars in a variety of disciplines, especially in several subdisciplines of biology and anthropology. As is the case with humans, much more has been written about mothers than fathers in the animal kingdom. Despite burgeoning information on animal fathers' behavior, Masson found that no book had been written for a general audience about fatherhood in the lives of animals. This book was written to fill that gap, after a thorough search of what turned out to be widely scattered publications and the author's personal contacts with many prominent experts. Masson contributes no original research, but his personal observations, speculations, conclusions, and questions for future research are spread throughout the text. Masson's main thrust is to attack the commonly held belief that among all primates and most animals, males are at best uninvolved fathers and at worst kill their offspring. He demonstrates that these negative beliefs are clearly at odds with the devotion and diligence that some male members of the animal world direct toward their young. The book's title is derived from the actions of one of nature's most devoted fathers, the emperor penguins. The male emperor penguin incubates an egg, received from his female mate, through a brutally cold and blustery winter. While his mate is out to sea feeding, the fasting male penguin balances the egg on his feet and nestles it in his brood pouch for up to 3 months. If the egg hatches before his mate returns, the male penguin nurtures the chick and feeds it penquin milk by regurgitating a highly nutritious substance from the lining of his esophagus. Besides penguins, Masson delineates the extraordinary devotion of many other animal fathers including those among the wolves and foxes, beavers, sea horses, mallee fowl, marmosets and tamarins, teleost fish, prairie dogs, and tropical frogs. According to Masson, for these animal fathers parenting is a profound, all encompassing experience, something that involves their whole being, and not just a surrogate activity to replace 'real' life (p. 209). Not surprisingly, Masson considers these fathers superior in many way to human fathers. …" @default.
