- W109600246 abstract "In China much attention has been paid since the 1970s, and particularly in the past 2 years, to implementing population education in the schools. The population education program in Chinese schools is an important aspect of the middle school teaching program. A teaching purpose, requirements, and content have been formulated. The purpose of population education is to teach the students population science, to foster the students' correct outlook on population, and to promote a well rounded development of students morally, intellectually, and physically. The specific objectives of population education are outlined. To fulfill the program requirements, population education in schools is provided with rich content. There are 2 ways of introducting the content into the curriculum: part of the knowledge is centralized in lectures on population education; and part is decentralized into physiology and hygiene, biology, geography, and other subjects. Fairly good results have been achieved using these 2 methods of population education. By way of centralization, the purpose of teaching is clear and the time concentrated, thus the teachers and the students pay more attention to it. It is also necessary to integrate population education with other subjects. In addition to the national requirements, many schools have added the population state and development in their province, city or county to their teaching program so that the students can learn about the population situation of their native area. To improve the quality of population education, many provinces have held teaching training courses on population education to help them with the systematic knowledge of population science. The task is primarily handled by the Educational Institutes of respective provinces and municipalities. By the end of 1981, 59 training courses had been conducted and 4900 teachers trained. To improve training quality the Educational Institutes have complied and printed teaching materials. At this time population education is provided only in the ordinary schools and is unavailable in other kinds of schools. Leaders in some schools need to realize its importance. Much improvement could be made in the content and the quality of population education instruction." @default.
