- W109706502 abstract "There is ever-increasing evidence for the effects of language-mediated thought on cognition. In the last decade, language related to e.g. spatial topology (cf. Levinson and Wilkins 2006) and mathematics (cf. Gordon 2004 and Pica et. al 2004), has been shown to influence speakers' cognition in a wide variety of languages. The focus of the present study is the perception of actions by speakers of Tup-Karitina (K.), an Amazonian language that distinguishes between 'plural' verbs and 'singular' verbs in the case of many frequently-described actions. These include verbs glossed as 'go', 'come,' 'run,' 'get,' 'jump,' and 'fly.' For example, consider the following: 1. Nonso naka-tat-0 opok akan pip woman MOD-go.SG-NFUT white.people village to 'The woman went to the city.' 2. Nonso naka-hot-O opok akan pip woman MOD-go.PL-NFUT white.people village to 'The women went to the city.' In K., there is no morphological marking for number on nouns, nor is there regular verbal agreement for number. However, as we see in 1 and 2 for some actions an entirely different verb is utilized if the depicted action involves more than one participant. This is similar to other systems of 'participant number' evident in the typology literature. (Cf. Corbett 2001:247) This study addresses the following question: For K. subjects, are actions with multiple participants conceptually discriminated, vis-a-vis actions with solitary participants, in a way that they are not by non-K. subjects? Subjects were presented with triads of diagrams/cartoons, each of figures performing actions. The triads were unified according to action type, e.g. flying. One member of the triad could naturally be grouped with either remaining member of the triad, depending on the discrimination strategy employed. For instance, in the case of the 'flying' triad, there was one diagram of a bird flying. There was also a diagram of birds flying, and another of a plane flying. Therefore, the diagram of the bird flying could be grouped according to participant type (i.e. with the diagram of birds flying) or according to number (i.e. with the diagram of the plane flying). For seven non-K. subjects, triads were grouped according to number only 32% of the time. For the five K. subjects, however, actions were grouped by number 84% of the time. (2=12.3, df=1, p=.0004) This significant difference is explicable if we consider the effect of language-mediated thought processes. In discriminating between the depicted actions, the K. subjects are apparently influenced by the fact that the relevant 'plural' verbs are linguistically distinct from 'singular' verbs. It is likely for this reason that the actions themselves are construed differently by K. speakers, when contrasted to the construal of speakers of languages without the phenomenon of 'plural' verbs." @default.
