- W110617099 abstract "Almost twenty years ago Heisenberg wrote the first two of his papers [1] entitled, „Die beobachtbaren Grössen in der Theorie der Elementarteilchen.“ Searching for concepts which can be expected to remain relevant in a future theory of elementary particles, he singles out the asymptotic properties of wave functions which describe the reactions between particles. The amplitudes describing all these reactions form the elements of the S-matrix [2], and Heisenberg goes on to study the implications of unitarity and Lorentz invariance for this matrix. In a third paper [3], following a suggestion by Kramers, he considers the S-matrix elements as analytic functions of the momentum variables and identifies the zeros of the S-matrix for positive imaginary momenta with the position of stationary states, or single particle states, as we would say nowadays [4]." @default.
