- W110687078 abstract "This chapter discusses carbohydrate metabolism in ascites tumor and HeLa cells and presents a comparison with ascites tumor cells, leucocytes, and brain. The glycolytic enzymes are present in large excess and in intact cells glycolysis is limited by the availability of inorganic phosphate, which is required for the regeneration of glycolytic adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Because phosphate transport is slow compared to glycolysis, the regeneration of inorganic phosphate and its availability for glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase is therefore the rate-limiting factor of glycolysis. Rapidly growing cells that convert ATP to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in the course of many synthetic processes express their glycolytic capacity more effectively than cells with restricted synthetic functions. Under aerobic conditions, the mitochondrial enzymes that catalyze oxidative phosphorylation compete with the glycolytic enzymes for inorganic phosphate and ADP. The very active glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphoglycerate kinase, found in tumor cells, compete successfully with the mitochondria. The effective competition of glycolysis with oxidative phosphorylation results in the aerobic formation of lactate, a uniform feature of cancer cells." @default.
