- W11101067 abstract "The psychological study of motor skills started in the late nineteenth century. During the last few decades it has gained momentum as a part of a multidisciplinary research effort. Historical controversies about stimulus-based and autonomous processes of motor control have been resolved; both types of process cooperate in various ways. Movements are adjusted to the spatial characteristics of the environment and to the timing of environmental events and to concurrent movements of other parts of the body. Visuo-motor coordination is highly adaptive and most likely subserved by visual information which is not exactly the same as that which underlies perception. Motor timing can be related to sensory information which specifies critical times for certain actions, but can also be intrinsic, governed by a central timekeeper. Motor coordination can be in the service of performance, but for ‘unnatural’ tasks it can also impede performance; cross-talk at various levels of motor control typically has the effect that concurrent movements of, for example, the upper limbs become more similar than intended." @default.
