- W111082960 abstract "The 24th ABNF Annual Scientific Conference and Meeting was held in the legislative citadel of this great nation: Washington, DC. Conference attendees were inspired by the presentations and by the historical backdrop of events that have shaped this country, from the March on Washington to the Inauguration of the first Black President. The Smithsonian proudly displays the inaugural gown of the First Lady, Michele Obama; the Woolworth counter at which the Black college students staged a sit-in demonstration during the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties; and, the artifacts of slaves whose toil formed the foundation of the antebellum South showcased alongside the gear of the Black Calvary that courageously fought during the Civil War. As a frequent attendee at political events, this Editor is often struck by the obvious lack of nurse colleagues among the assemblage. Having presented testimony before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine, having organized a protest march, and having prepared policy briefs for a mayoral candidate, this Editor has made a concerted effort to participate in die political process. In personal conversations with political candidates, the statement has been made that nurses do not vote as a bloc and therefore tend to have a diluted political voice. Potential candidates seeking office are typically only interested in those constituents who regularly engage in voting activities, and who make their influence and issues known to prospective candidates. Unfortunately, while schools of nursing curricula contain courses on health policy, the orientation of that subject matter is focused more on theoretical constructs than on the utilization of effective oliticization strategies to ensure the adoption of the concepts under discussion. This Editor contends that as the nation moves forward in its implementation of the Healthcare Reform Act, it is imperative that the members of the discipline of nursing are on point to engage in those political activities that will help to inform the future of healthcare delivery. At a meeting held last Fall, the Board of Directors of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc. voted to establish the Nurses In Washington Internship (NIWI) project, creating an avenue by which a member of the organization could be assisted to gain firsthand knowledge of the politicization process. Each March the NIWI program under the sponsorship of the Nursing Alliance Organization hosts a three-day workshop on Capitol Hill to help nurses acquire skills needed to effect political change. We invite you to consider applying for this scholarship opportunity. The 2012 ABNF-NTWI application can be downloaded from the organization's website at www.abnf.net. To provide detail with regard to how nurses might become more involved, delineated below are the political activities used to effect change: campaigning, communicating, voting, and protesting. Campaigning - activities related to the act or process of electing a potential candidate: * Know the issues associated with pending or potential legislation and formulate a view related to that legislation. * Organize a 'call to action' by urging nursing health professionals to contact a legislator, and identifying a legislator's position on an issue. * Work for a political candidate. * Attend political meetings. * Make a campaign contribution. * Provide links to a candidate's website. Communicating- activities related to acts of communication: * Join organizations and assist in the development and wide dissemination of policy statements. * Write letters to the editors of well-known lay newspapers and professional healthcare journals. …" @default.
