- W111261567 abstract "Abstract: Interferons have been found to exert significant potentiating activity in vivo or in vitro on several cell types in relation to the expression of aggressive or cytolytic behaviour. Among the cells afflicted in such a way cytolytic T cells, natural killer (NK) and macrophages are particularly strongly influenced. The regulatory role of interferon in relation to NK cells will be discussed in detail as the interferons may play a close to absolute role with regard to allowing these cells to express lytic ability. Interferon of any type can be shown to activate the cytotoxic ability of the NK system with a comparable efficiency when compared at the same anti-viral titers. The action of interferon is via a direct interaction with NK or pre-NK cells, whereafter the increase taking place will require RNA and protein synthesis but no DNA production. The consequences at the effector cell level of interferon contact are several involving an increase in lytic potential and recycling capacity of the NK cells as well as a maturation of pre-NK cells into NK cells as measured by surface antigens and lytic ability. Indirect evidence exist suggesting that the normal levels of NK activity in vivo may be under regulation by the endogenous levels of “spontaneously” produced interferon. A variety of adjuvants known to stimulate NK activity could all be shown to involve interferon and no convincing evidence exists as yet of regulatory agents for NK cells outside the interferon family." @default.
