- W111509703 abstract "There are many parallels between renal glomerular and vascular structure and function. Endothelial cells line both glomeruli and vessels, and mesangial cells are modified vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) (1-3). Endothelial and mesangial cells together account for about 85% of the total number of cells that make up the glomerulus (1 2), and these cells are distinguished by their biological characteristics and function (1-4). Both produce a variety of mitogens and cytokines known to have autocrine and paracrine activity. Their ability to produce growth factors is relevant given the anatomic relationship of the cells to each other. Anatomically, the glomerular basement membrane incompletely surrounds the endothelial wall, leaving an area of direct contact between the mesangial cells and the endothelium (2). This simulates the anatomical and functional relationship between endothelial cells and VSMC in the vasculature (3,4).KeywordsVascular Smooth Muscle CellMesangial CellVascular Smooth Muscle Cell ProliferationGlomerular Mesangial CellHuman Mesangial CellThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
