- W111861449 abstract "Termites are of deep biological interest because of the intriguing mechanisms involved in their caste systems. Two important biological agents, hormones and pheromones, are involved in the differentiation of castes in termites. Colonies of Postelectrotermes nayari consist of a few hundred termites and can be reared easily in the laboratory. In a method described in the chapter, laboratory cultures comprised 100–200 individuals, including pseudergates, soldiers and a few reproductive forms established in glass troughs. The pseudergate can be distinguished from larvae by its greater pigmentation and by its abdomen, which is comparatively wide and flat dorso-ventrally. The chapter studies the effect of treatment of farnesyl methyl ether (FME) on pseudergates of P. nayari. High doses of FME resulted in the formation of presoldiers. Low doses did not produce any presoldiers, although a dosage of 1.5 μg produced pseudergate-presoldier intercastes. Other intermediate forms, pseudo-imagoes, were also obtained from several treated groups. The chapter also discusses the role of juvenile hormone JH in soldier formation in P. nayari." @default.
