- W111993473 abstract "This chapter discusses the system-level design of a roaming multi-modal multi-sensor system and puts the associated general problems into a real-life context, based on the case study of Versatile On-board Traffic-Embedded Roaming Sensors (VOTERS) – a sensing system to monitor the structural health of roads and bridge decks. The design challenges of this and similar distributed sensing systems are addressed. First, the background of comparable sensing systems is reviewed, then an overview of the VOTERS multi-modal multi-sensor system with its system-level requirements for sensing, synchronizing, processing, and storing is presented. The focus then shifts to details of the hierarchical distribution of work, the organization and structure of handling large data amounts including a communication framework, and the challenges of enabling sensor fusion. All aspects are considered in the context of achieving a fully automated system." @default.
