- W112079610 abstract "This article outlines the work of the German philosopher and social theorist/analyst, Jürgen Habermas, and its adoption within geography. Attention is also briefly paid to the relationship between Habermas and the so-called ‘Frankfurt School’ of critical theory. The significance of Habermas' work, and particularly his book Knowledge and Human Interests, in the emergence of critical geography in the late 1970s is emphasized, although it is argued that subsequently there has been some disengagement with the work of Habermas by critical human geographers, in part related to his continued attachment to notions of truth, enlightenment, and modernity. Attention moves to considering how Habermas' work has changed since the publication of Knowledge and Human Interests, with four strands of work being highlighted: the study of language as speech acts; examinations of action and societal rationalization; the concept of a philosophy of intersubjectivity; and the notion of communicative ethics. As each strand of work is discussed, reference is made to their uptake and potential relevance to human geography." @default.
