- W112189529 abstract "The surface phonon spectrum can be investigated by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in the impact scattering regime. We will describe the general features of electron-phonon interaction. In particular, we will discuss how to explore multiple scattering effects for the measurement of the surface phonons. As examples we present measurements performed for Ni(100) surfaces, both clean and covered with (2×2) overlayers of oxygen and sulfur, and after disordered adsorption of oxygen. While the presence of sulfur or of randomly distributed oxygen adatoms affects the dynamics of the substrate only marginally, a softening of the surface modes is observed when the oxygen adatoms form an ordered c(2×2) structure. We tentatively explain this effect as due to internal strains which build up in the near surface region in presence of the adatoms. This picture is confirmed by the result of lattice-dynamical calculations performed for a model with first and second derivatives of the two-body interaction potentials between first and second nearest neighbours. We show that the inclusion of the stress terms enables us to reproduce the observed phonon frequencies and dispersion." @default.
