- W112227026 abstract "r history of the African slave trade, the sale of slaves in mixed lots, forced planta tion labor, and dishonored contracts of indenture have institutionalized a West Indian literary narrative whose prominent themes have been geographic and lin guistic dislocation, and whose strategic preoccupations have been, in a large sense, public and political. Titles as various as Samuel Selvon's The Lonely Londoners (1956) and V. S. Naipaul's The Enigma of Arrival (1987) testify to this overwhelm ing West Indian concern with place and the filiation of languages as premier sites of identity in both social and artistic contexts. The Enigma of Arrival translates geog raphy and displacement as one's arrival a certain historical juncture, constituting the continuing search for a defining identity in the wake of the enigma of diasporic dislocation. These texts attest further to the insistent program of a critical geogra phy, etymologically a world writing of the new place, analytically an interrogation of the new place, an inquiry into the geography of the self that advances the political vision of the recuperation of voices lost, silenced or repressed in the colonial transmigration. The signal irony of these texts is that in varying degrees they help ratify their own colonial program of masking and repression in anxious disavowals of the homoerotic. The socially discursive lives of Selvon's eponymous lonely Londoners is set against the ballad of their daily exchange, the will to narrative, the desire for story that might make a teleological difference to their otherwise disjunctive experience. One such ballad discovers the promiscuous Cap's sexual adventure with a transvestite man, replete with textual denials from Moses, at the time he didn't know nothing (39), and from Cap, He tell Moses he didn't know anything until he begin, when he find the going difficult and realise that something wrong (40). Delivered with the typical self-inoculating humor of the group of friends, this narrative of homoerotic misadventure is immediately, without transition, followed in the text by the sudden announcement of Cap's marriage: Who can tell what was the vap that hit Cap and make him get married? (40). The textual question, inviting speculation on the unstated cause by virtue of its structural relation to the" @default.
