- W1123663336 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of transfer RNA (tRNA)-like molecules focusing on structural peculiarities and biological recognition. Some mitochondrial tRNAs possess quite peculiar structures lacking the entire D or the T and V stems and loops. The chapter presents a comparative analysis of the overall structure of some of the tRNAs by biophysical methods and investigates in detail their recognitory and functional properties. In addition to their role as donors of aminoacyl residues for classical mRNA- and ribosome-dependent protein synthesis, a wide variety of other functions are performed by certain tRNAs and tRNA-like RNAs in cellular systems. When aminoacylated species perform such functions, the aminoacyl moiety is generally transferred to an acceptor molecule, as in the case of acceptor proteins, of glycans, and of phosphatidylglycerol. An exception to this scheme is the involvement of a glutamyl–tRNA in chlorophyll synthesis. In other instances, the uncharged species is the active form as in the production of particular guanylic acid derivatives and in DNA synthesis mediated by the reverse transcriptase." @default.
