- W112489997 abstract "Body size is the most obvious characteristic of living things. It is also arguably the most important because it constrains the rate of all biological reactions within organisms and influences how they interact with their abiotic and biotic environment. The essential activities of survival, reproduction, and growth are governed by the rate at which organisms acquire, process, and transform energy, which is largely determined by body size and temperature. Over evolutionary time, the complex interactions between metabolism, body size, and environmental conditions have led to a number of well-documented ecogeographic gradients. These include the island rule (dwarfing of large animals on isolated islands, gigantism of small ones), Bergmann’s rule (a cline in body size within species or genera with larger-bodied populations or species occupying colder climates), and Cope’s rule (an evolutionary increase in body size of lineages over geologic time). The first two rules are clearly related to energetic tradeoffs in some fashion, although causal mechanisms remain unclear. The status of the last is uncertain." @default.
