Launched by state officials in the middle 1990s, the destination was designed to conjure up images of a 'Cote D'Azurian' sophistication blended with the 'culture' of one of the most celebrated civilizations of the Americas: the Mayans. Although Mayan communities have resided in the interior of the peninsula for centuries, they had been largely excluded from the tourist gaze until the end of the 1990s, when the 'selling' of culture, particularly authentic Mayan culture, began to gain ground. Drawing from fieldwork data gathered in 2009, this chapter examines this phenomenon, looking at issues of commodification, marketization and authenticity in the context of tourist attractions premised on the (re)presentation of culture, particularly Mayan culture." @default.
