- W1127822527 abstract "Kalaja, Teppo Student selection of Physical Education teacher program in the state of change University of Jyvaskyla, 2012, 202 p. (Studies in Sport, Physical Education and Health, ISSN 0356-1070; 181) ISBN 978-951-39-4740-8 (nid.) ISBN 978-951-39-4741-5 (PDF) Finnish Summary Diss. The Ministry of Education and Culture has set demands and challenges for Finnish universities to lighten the selection process and to improve the chances of new high school graduates to success within the entrance examinations. While the changes in society and in school have changed the image of a teacher, the selection procedure of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program has not undertaken any major changes during past decades. The procedure has taken a week for 30 staff members and the proportion of enrolled new graduates has only been 5–10 %.The objective of this study was to profile the applicants and to analyze if the number of test items used could be decreased. In addition, the effects of the 2010 major change in the selection procedure were studied. The data consisted of the success criteria of applicants of the years 2002–2004 (N=2288), 2008–2009 (N=1659) and 2010–2011 (N=2688) in the entrance exams for the PETE program of the University of Jyvaskyla. The amount of applicants has increased significantly during the past years while only 3–8% has been enrolled. The accepted ones are 22 years old in average, their Grade Point Average (GPA) rises high and they come from all over the country, although slightly centered round Central Finland. The native Swedish speaking applicants are very rare and only 1–2 enroll yearly. The results show that the selection process could have been lightened considerably. If the number of the tests of motor abilities would have been reduced from 8 to 4, the cohort of enrolled would still have a 90% similarity. Reducing the amount of multisports would free time and give a chance to measure important skills of modern school, for example interaction skills in Group Assessment Process. Towards the end of the past decade the proportion of new graduates rose up to 40%, but dramatically dropped back to a low level on 2011 student selection. The old high school graduates scored higher in the entrance tests of multi-sports and in the micro-teaching. However, it seems that adhering to the objective of the ME by replacing older graduates with the current ones would not have a dramatic effect. The selection procedure undertook a major change for the pre-selection in 2010, affording participation of the test of literature comprehension in several cities around the country regardless of applicants GPA. The regional equality did not appear amongst the enrolled ones while the proportion of graduates of Central Finland was too high. In addition it concluded that 50% of enrolled men came from a cohort of lower marks. It seems that they overhauled the new graduates on the line of enrollment. It is very important to investigate their performance in PETE studies in the future." @default.
