- W112953767 abstract "For at least some maize hybrids, the level of nitrogen supplied to the crop affects the proportions (Osborne-Mendel separation) of various kinds of proteins in the grain, as well as the total concentration. As the amount of nitrogen is increased from insufficient to above the level for maximum yield of grain, nitrogen concentration in the grain is increased. Most of the increase is accounted for by increased biosynthesis of the fraction extractable by aqueous ethanol (zein). Since this prolamine is practically devoid of lysine and tryptophan, the quality of the grain for some purposes is harmed by nitrogen fertilization. From an agronomic point of view, additional research is needed to determine the manner in which fertilizer nitrogen should be provided to maize to achieve both the best possible quality and maximum yields of grain. Results obtained with a maize mutation, opaque-2, show what can be done to improve quality through genetic manipulation. The advances in understanding of zein biosynthesis which these genetic investigations have prompted should aid greatly in maximizing the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization for producing high yields of high-quality grain." @default.
