- W113018818 abstract "VALERY KARBALEVICH, ALAKSANDR LUKASHENKO: Politicheskiy portret. (Alexander Lukashenko: A Political Portrait). Moskva: Partizan, 2010, 718 pp.Alexander Lukashenko: A Political Portrait published in 2010 in Moscow by Partisan Publishing on the eve of presidential elections in Belarus, presents an overview of the political phenomenon that is Alexander Lukashenko. It paints a portrait of the Belarusian president and his rise to power, which is partly psychological, partly private and partly political. In addition, its author, Valery Karbalevich, a well-known Belarusian political analyst, puts Lukashenko in a wider political, social and economic context with a social and political background of the last two decades in Belarus. reader can therefore absorb the atmosphere of the final days of the Belarussian Soviet Socialist Republic, the first years of an independent Belarus and the period of Lukashenko's first government. Karbalevich also shows how the political, economic and social system of contemporary Belarus has evolved. For the first time we are presented with an in-depth analysis of the development of Lukashenko's political life and career. The first chapters of the book (Low-level manager, Birth of a politician, Member of the Supreme Council) take us through the years prior to Lukashenka's first presidential term. In this first section Karbalevich tries to answer the question of how it happened that a boy born in a remote village in eastern Belarus, and raised without a father, became not only Europe's last dictator and the man who has ruled Belarus with an iron fist since 1994, but for some time (in the declining years of Yeltsin's presidency) was also a contender for this key Russian position. author notes that Lukashenko possesses innate political skill, which, in addition to his phenomenal powers of intuition, can read and respond to the public mood which has resulted in a continued and genuine backing particulary in the Belarusian countryside. Karbalevich also shows how an ordinary kolkhoz director form eastern Belarus was able to win both the support of politicians in Minsk and of people in the provinces, leading him to the highest office in the country. In subsequent chapters such as The presidential election-the electoral revolution under the name of Alexander Lukashenko, Beginning of the presidency-the days of a beautiful Alexandrian beginning; Presidential power struggle and Revolution at the request of state Karbalevich describes the changes taking place in Belarusian politics during the mid-1990s such as the demise of political leaders such as prime minister Vyacheslav Kebich, who lost to Lukashenko in the presidential elections of 1994. These chapters also show how Lukashenko consolidated his power and how he dealt with the democratic parliament and, finally, how he began Belarus's reversal to a Soviet-style leadership. author also acknowledges that Lukashenko has acted skillfully, winning peoples' hearts; for example, those of farmers from the countryside and workers from the cities. From the beginning of his governance, he successfully put down strikes and provided people with certain social benefits such as pensions. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he earned the gratitude of Belarusians, as the state, in comparison to other former Soviet republics, was one of the most stable and largely without ethnic or social problems. This resulted in the Belarusian president being seen as the sole guarantor of stability and order in the country, i.e. the only person able to guarantee the social contract between the state and its people. In following chapters, Karbalevich develops his political portrait of the Belarusian president. Alexander Lukashenko is shown as a ruthlessly ambitious man, whose main aim is to maintain power. For this purpose, he not only manipulated the results of a referendum, which would allow him to hold an unlimited number of terms in office but also removed unwanted opponents who might have caused him political discomfort. …" @default.
