- W1134532004 abstract "This chapter discusses the spatio-temporal properties of area 18 neurones by recording single unit activity in cats, which had an abnormal visual experience, a condition known to interfere with the normal development of the y-system. The size-velocity coupling of area 18 neurones is always abolished when the binocular convergence is altered. Two abstracts summarizing some of these results are presented. It is reported that abnormal binocular vision induced during the critical period abolishes the spatio-velocity coupling of area 18 neurones. Each cell maintains selectivity for a number of parameters of the visual stimulus, including size, but size selectivity is no longer dependent on velocity. This functional change in the response properties reflects an altered development of the y-system, which represents the major input to area 18, and is known to be particularly susceptible to an abnormal binocular experience. The observation that a given neuron can respond to a wide range of stimuli differing in size suggests that the dynamic properties of these cells are consistent with a role in the perception of an object moving in depth, a condition in which the size of the retinal image expands or contracts. The data shows that animals with a disturbed binocular vision loose the spatio-velocity coupling in area 18 neurones, thus reinforcing the suggestion that spatio-temporal coupling is associated with the perception of motion in depth." @default.
