- W113492713 abstract "As early as 1905, the same year that Korotkoff described a practical method for measurement of the diastolic blood pressure, Geisbock[1], using the old method of finger occlusion plethysmography, stated that among patients with systolic hypertension ‘one finds an unusual frequency of those who as directors of big enterprises had a great deal of responsibility and who after a long period of psychic overwork, became nervous.’ This hypothesis, that nervous tension somehow causes the disease of arterial hypertension, caught the imagination of many investigators but 75 years after the original suggestion, the question is still wide open. There are a few reasons for this. First are the methodological difficulties of behavioral research. If one is to prove that certain personality characteristics or behavioral patterns are typical of patients with essential hypertension, the methods used should be objective, reproducible, easily applicable to unselected patients, and most of all comparable from study to study. Unfortunately, behavioral research is dominated by conceptual thinking, which influences both the instruments of measurement and the interpretation to such a degree that it is frequently impossible to compare various studies. The second problem is the lack of a suitable animal model." @default.
