- W1135107317 abstract "Publisher Summary The understanding of the nervous mechanism of relaxation of penis muscles has encountered serious obstacles although it was demonstrated more than a 100 years ago that they could be relaxed by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve. This chapter considers the function of the efferent nerve fibres of the bull retractor penis muscle—that is, of the excitatory and inhibitory fibres, and the possible peripheral autonomic mechanism of erection. The afferent nerve fibres are beyond the scope of this consideration. The large amount of these characteristically coiled and frequently anastomosing fibres is reflected by a high content of noradrenaline (3.8, μg/g) in this muscle, which probably is devoid of adrenaline. If the nervous supply is analogous to that of the retractor penis of the dog and the cat, the bulk of the motor fibres reach the muscle by way of the pudic nerve, probably originating from the paravertebral ganglia at the sacral level. A minor part runs down along the hypogastric nerve via the pelvic plexus." @default.
