- W113681201 abstract "This chapter focuses on the life cycle of Ptyalincola ondatrae (Wootton and Murrell), infecting the salivary glands of muskrats. Ptyalincola ondatrae (Wootton and Murrell) lives as adults in the salivary and oral mucous glands of muskrats, Ondatra zibethicus, in the Douglas Lake area of Michigan, United States. Eggs that do not hatch outside of the snail host are infective to the operculate snail, Campeloma decisum. Daily dissection of A. grandis mussels experimentally exposed to several C. decisum snails shedding cercariae indicated that the cercariae are trapped by the labial palps, cast off their tails, and penetrate the labial palps to and through the mantle. Muskrats, from swamp areas known to be free of both the mussel and snail intermediate hosts, were used in infection experiments. Control animals from the same source proved to be negative upon postmortem. Clams were opened for young muskrats, but adult animals readily opened the mussels by holding the shell with the hinge away from them, forcing the lower incisor teeth between the valves." @default.
