Bellini: Study the arias variously as solfeggio, with rhythmic declamation, as a vocalise, and then begin to sing them: first without expression while nonetheless heeding the use of consonants and dramatic accents, then finally performing them, interpreting them. Reynaldo Hahn: A true singer also knows how to give meaning to the arabesques of a vocalise and to shape them in obedience to the representation of a sentiment and a sensation.
