Critical-Technical Anthology for Vocal (Soprano-Tenor). Edited by Elio Battaglia. 3 volumes: Part I-Preparatory Course; Part IICourse of Medium Difficulty; Part IIICourse of High Difficulty. Ricordi, 2012.Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Tone sprechen, Worte klingen (Sounds speak, words resound). Christa Ludwig: As a German singer, I am convinced that legato and messa di voce are the foundation and mainstay of 'bel cantare' or 'belcanto'. Bellini: Study the arias variously as solfeggio, with rhythmic declamation, as a vocalise, and then begin to sing them: first without expression while nonetheless heeding the use of consonants and dramatic accents, then finally performing them, interpreting them. Reynaldo Hahn: A true singer also knows how to give meaning to the arabesques of a vocalise and to shape them in obedience to the representation of a sentiment and a sensation. From Methode de chant du Conservatoire de Musique (Paris, 1803): These arias may be sung with the words or with vowels. Editor Elio Battaglia, writing in the Preface, comments: It was intended that the singer first use pure vowel sounds to explore the emotional depths of the music; the text would then be added in a subsequent phase of study, consonant with the composer's exclusively musical design. This same principle remains, in our estimation, the primary scope of (all quotations from the Preface, printed in all three volumes of this anthology). This monumental work is both a technical course of vocal development and a selected anthology of vocalises from many singing teachers and composers from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. The editor offers this array of material so that teachers can choose those vocalises that best suit the talents of the individual student. In the Preface, Battaglia explains: It is therefore not the voice that should adapt to the method, but vice versa. The teacher needs to be able to streamline the method to each student's individual vocal character and natural potential by means of a kind of Socratic maieutics. (A footnote explains, That is, not instilling art but rather extracting it from the soul of the student.) Based on the belief that voice students who expect to sing today's standard classical repertory, especially the operatic repertory, must school their voices both technically and emotionally with the study of vocalises before attempting the study and performance of difficult works, editor Elio Battaglia has compiled a comprehensive course of study in this publication.Beginning with the excellent and extended Preface, which gives the history of vocalises and many reasons for their use in vocal study, Battaglia has drawn from many sources in structuring the progressive courses of study. …" @default.
