- W11389436 abstract "Henry Gustav Molaison (H.M.) is one of the most famous cases in the history of neuroscience. His profound amnesia, caused by the removal of bilateral medial temporal lobes, was carefully characterized by the behavioral neuroscientist, Brenda Milner, and helped to elucidate how medial temporal structures affect memory systems. Dominant theories on memory before H.M.'s case had held that memory could not be localized in the brain. H.M.'s case marked the beginning of modern inquiry into the neuroanatomical organization of memory, and the beginning of the discovery of distinctions between different memory systems. This article reviews the impact of H.M.'s case on the neuroscience of memory and the important distinctions in memory systems that have continued to be elucidated today." @default.
