- W113954972 abstract "Previous research on the relatively new, developmental period between adolescence and adulthood entitled, emerging adulthood, has shown that emerging adult women engage in a period of self-focused exploration in the areas of work and relationships. During this period and as a result of their explorations, women form aspirations for the future. At the same time, there is an under-representation of women in leadership roles and in certain fields, warranting further research into the formulation of women's career aspirations. Considerations for family, self-esteem and perceived work-family conflict have been proposed as influential on the development of women’s aspirations and were investigated in this thesis. Specifically, it was predicted that women who anticipate more work-family conflict and give more consideration to family life would be less likely to aspire to careers entailing leadership and would be more likely to aspire to female-dominated careers. Further, it was predicted that women with higher self-esteem would aspire to leadership roles and male-dominated careers. It was also hypothesised that high self-esteem and low perceived work-family conflict would be associated with aspirations for leadership and for male-dominated careers. A total of 183 female participants aged 18-29 years (M = 21.91, SD = 2.15), living in Australia and currently childless completed a 20 minute online survey investigating the psychosocial predictors of emerging adults' aspirations. Regression analyses showed that women giving high consideration to family were less likely to aspire to leadership roles or traditionally male-dominated careers. Inconsistent to predictions, perceived work-family conflict nor self-esteem predicted leadership or occupational aspirations. The findings support Farmer’s (1997) theory on women’s careers impacted by their future family obligations; it also underscores the need for organisations to implement more supportive work-family structures. Future research on women’s leadership and occupational aspirations should be conducted longitudinally to investigate whether aspirations change overtime." @default.
