- W114282360 abstract "This chapter presents a study of the properties of fructose-l,6-diphosphate (FDP) aldolases obtained from phyletically divergent systems. The results indicate the presence in nature of two aldolase classes. Because of the distinct molecular and catalytic properties of their biological distribution, it is postulated that these classes have independent evolutionary origins and are analogous in that sense. Interspecies variants of each class have similar properties, suggesting strong conservation of critical structural features in phylogeny. Intraorganismic redundancy of analogous and homologous FDP aldolase variants have been detected in some systems. With the exception of enzymes that require biotin and pyridoxal phosphate, the properties of the enzymes appear to be similar to one or the other of the analogous FDP aldolases. These correlations suggest that most enzymes facilitating aldolase-type reactions may contain modulations of either of two basic catalytically active sites. Thus, it is possible that this group of enzymes evolved from two primitive gene systems." @default.
