• W1144450 abstract "Currently, most national and sub-national Ecological Footprint analyses report results in hectares, hectares with world-average biological productivity for a given year. Yield and equivalence factors are used to express bioproductive area measured in ac tual hectares in terms of the corresponding number of normalized global hectares. The global hectare calculation method is widely adopted and described in existing papers. Equivalence factors are adjusted on a yearly basis to ensure that total number of gl obal hectares on Earth equals the total number of biologically productive hectares. Because of this normalization, although the actual useful biological production from a single global hectare has increased over time, this increase is not displayed directly in time trends shown in global hectares. This yearly change in the total production of a global hectare makes time trends of Ecological Footprint and biocapacity difficult to interpret. This paper proposes a method for reporting Ecological Footprint and biocapacity time trends in global hectares, hectares normalized to have world-average biological productivity in a single reference year. A constant global hectare allows trends in both total bioproductive area and trends in yield and productivity to be shown explicitly. This paper discusses the need for a constant global hectare, describes a preliminary method to calculate constant global hectares that was used in WWF International's Living Planet Report 2006, and discusses the implications of this method for Ecological Footprint applications." @default.
