- W114491001 abstract "This chapter discusses the release of prostaglandin F2α during the bovine estrous cycle. The release of endogenous prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) from the uterus at the end of the estrous cycle has shown to be concomitant with luteolysis in many subprimate animals. This release of PGF2α is very exact in time and controls the length of the luteal phase; thus, the control of this release is very important for the regulation of corpus luteum activity during estrous cycles and early pregnancy. The formation of PGF2α in the uterus is because of many biochemical transformations: Arachidonic acid is released from phospholipids and triglycerides and the formed free arachidonic acid is converted by a prostaglandin cyclooxygenase enzyme to prostaglandin endoperoxides (Prostaglandin G2 and H2); these endoperoxides could be converted into primary prostaglandins, thromboxanes, prostacyclin, and hydroxylated fatty acids. PGF2α that is released from the uterus is metabolized in the lungs and to some extent in many other organs by the enzymes 15-hydroxy-prostanoate dehydrogenase and Δ13-reductase to 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2α. The half-life of this metabolite is around 7–8 min, which is much longer than the primary prostaglandins. Thus, this metabolite is a very suitable parameter for the measurement of PGF2α biosynthesis and release." @default.
