- W1145164850 abstract "The action of peptides on neuromuscular transmission is of a potential interest from two different viewpoints. First, under physiological conditions peptides may serve as potential modulators of synaptic transmission. For example, it has been shown that, the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), has augmenting effect on the number of neurotransmitter quanta released by nerve stimulation (Gold, 1982) The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) also increases transmitter release, but unlike VIP, it has a long-lasting enhancing action (Johnston et al, 1983). Peptides differ not only in the duration of their action, but also in the characteristics of their effect. The 11 amino acid peptide, Substance P has a biphasic effect on transmitter release, (Steinackre, 1977), while enkephalin reduces the quantal content of release at the frog neuromuscular junction (Bixby and Spitzer, 1983)." @default.
