- W114712866 abstract "The radiation protection effectiveness of several substituted derivatives of oxytryptamine was investigated using the survival time of total- body irradiated white mice. 5-methoxytryptamine and 5-hydroxy- omega -N- monomethyltryptamine have the same protective effect as serotonin, 4- hydroxytryptamine is not very effective, while all other substituted compounds investigated are nearly ineffective. The radiation protection effectiveness of the oxytryptamines does not quite conform to their other pharmacologic effects. However, it depends upon a specific molecular structure. The protective effect of serotonin derivatives is erased almost completely by deseril. The duration of the protective effect can be prolonged significantly by methylating of the 5- hydroxy group of serotonin or by inhibition of the monoaminoxydase. Like reserpine, tetrabenazine, a serotonin-liberator, has a protective effect which is insufficient for common purposes. Several hydrazines and thiaethylperazine are ineffective. The death rate of the animals, used for the experiments showed a distinct decrease using Reverin for antibiotical protection. A high radiation protective effect was obtained with 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-methoxytryptamine, 4- hydroxytryntamine, and substance 48/80, using the Brinkman-Lamberts apparatus for measuremests of thc injection pressure, with which oxygen-independent radiation effect ean be determined.
