• W115238788 abstract "This paper analyzes the patients’ choice of health service facilities with the empirical data collected in the survey conducted in the rural area of Sri Lanka. First, we reviewed the past research on the accessibility to health service in developing countries. Few studies have surveyed the poor’s accessibility to health service facilities. Then, we summarized the hospital system in Sri Lanka. One of the characteristics of health service in Sri Lanka is that public health service system is free at any place in the country. Then, we had the household survey which requests the local people to answer the record of accessing to the health service. The survey was held at one of the rural areas in Sri Lanka. On the basis of collected data, the hospital choice model incorporating the type of diseases and transportation modal choice is estimated. The model shows that (i) the unavailability of water and the increase of population older than 65 increase the possibility of occurrence of long-term critical diseases, whereas the increase of sanitary facilities decreases the possibility of long term critical diseases; (ii) the increase of people aged over 65, the decrease of income levels less than 4,500 Rupees and the increase of female population will increase the spread of long-term but not critical diseases; (iii) the children under 10 years-old and the members of households who do not have the access to proper sanitary facilities have a higher tendency to suffer with short-term critical diseases; and (iv) the increase of population in the age group 10-65 increases the spread of short-term but not critical diseases; (v) the number of beds and the number of doctors contribute to the positive attractiveness of hospital; (vi) the patients with long-term diseases consider the number of beds more important than the short-term diseases in choosing a hospital; (vii) the patients with critical diseases consider the number of beds more important than the patients with non-critical diseases in choosing a hospital; (viii) the patients with short-term non-critical disease feel less attractiveness in the number of doctors in choosing the hospital than the patients with other types of diseases; (ix) the value of travel time in accessing the health service is much higher than the average wage level." @default.
