- W1155600701 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the correlation of certain structures with the function of electrolyte transport in renal epithelia and outlines some morphological techniques for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of renal tubules in situ, with their strengths and limitations. A few points that are particularly important in the application of these techniques to renal tissue will be explained in more detail. The advantage of the study of renal epithelia in situ, in comparison to that of isolated tubules, is the possibility of discrimination of different cell types within one segment, of sampling great numbers of nephron segments within the same kidney, of simultaneous assessment of internephron heterogeneity, as well as of observation of the specific tubular environment. Morphological differences among renal cell types as well as their morphological modulation, associated with changes in their transport capacity, are often evident by simple fight and electron microscopic study." @default.
