- W115668739 abstract "ABSTRACT In an attempt to improve their operational efficiency, many manufacturing companies have implemented or are in the process of implementing computer-based material requirements planning systems. In principle, the successful implementation of such systems should result in a considerable reduction in the inventory maintained by the manufacturing unit. However, the experience of actual implementations of such systems during the past few years indicates that only a few of the operational systems have lived up to the expectations. Many interrelated factors, such as the non-arrival of the purchased/manufactured components at the required time and/or any quantity shortfalls, influence the successful operation of such systems. The non-availability of a few components required can mean that the job cannot be released to the shop floor, thereby resulting in a degradation of the performance of the manufacturing system and an increase in the work-in-process inventory. The effects of individual variables on the overall performance of such systems are not fully understood. Since controlled experiments cannot be carried out in the shop floor environment, computer simulation represents the best available alternative. This paper describes the computer simulation of a material requirements planning system, based on actual operational data from a manufacturing unit. The effects of component supply uncertainty, quantity shortfalls, the forced release of jobs with less than the required quantity, and the use of safety stock on the performance of the manufacturing system are evaluated. considerable reductions in the stock value response were observed when using the partial kit job release rule and this is also linked to the improvements in the percentage stock withdrawal and percentage jobs start on time response values. The partial kit job release rule has been shown to perform “best” under conditions whereby the supply of component parts is only affected by uncertainty in the arrival quantity of component parts. A percentage reduction in the incoming order or job quantity still means that a proportion of the planned job quantity can still be released for manufacture. One effect of the partial kit job release rule, which may be considered to be undesirable in some industries, is the increased numbers of jobs being released to the manufacturing function. The tendency when using this rule is for more jobs to be released but with smaller job quantities. The effect of maintaining safety stock generally tends to reduce the effectiveness of the partial kit job release rule due to the safety stock being used to offset the effects of the component supply uncertainty." @default.
