- W115950028 abstract "Contents of rare Earth elements are very low in sulfides (often less than 0.1 ppm), since they are related to lithophile elements. The influence crystal lattice parameters of minerals, and the source of sulfide material on the REE distribution in sulfides have been poorly studied. Data on REEs in sulfides of recent hydrothermal vents are scant [1, 2], because it is very difficult to extract the pure monomineral sulfide phases from them. The study of REEs in the monomineral phases is preferable, since this may reveal the crystallochemical constraints of REE incorporation into sulfides. The need for REE concentration complicates chemical analysis. Numerous data were recently obtained on REE composition in fluids of recent hydrothermal systems of the World Ocean. Therefore, it is very important to study REEs in sulfide ores formed in the hydrothermal solution and seawater mixing zone. The REE distribution in hydrothermal fluids is sharply distinguished from that in the surrounding ocean water by the presence of a positive Eu anomaly and the absence of a negative Ce anomaly, which is typical of oxidized ocean water. In addition, REE content in fluid is 10‐1000 times higher than in ocean water, and the REE distribution shows a relative HREE depletion [3‐6]. The study of recent hydrothermal vents can be useful for understanding REE behavior in sulfides. Physicochemical parameters of fluid and composition of dissolved REEs are known or can be measured. Based on REE composition in sulfides formed during fluid discharge, one can determine the constraints and mechanisms of REE distribution in sulfide ores. Materials and methods. At present, seven hydrothermal fields have been discovered and studied within the Mid-Atlantic Ridge [7, 8]. Sulfide ores studied in the present work were sampled in the TAG, Broken Spur, and Rainbow fields. The samples were taken by Yu.A. Bogdanov and E.G. Gurvich during cruises of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. The chemical and mineral compositions of sulfide ores are listed in Table 1. It is seen that all samples consist of chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2 ) and sphalerite (ZnS). The sphalerite contains admixture amounts of pyrite (FeS 2 ) and chalcopyrite (no more than 7%), whereas the chalcopyrite contains an admixture of pyrite and sphalerite (no more than 12%). Only one sample (3393-2) consists of nearly equal contents of pyrite and sphalerite. Quartz (5%) is the only nonsulfide mineral found as an impurity in the chalcopyrite sample from the Broken Spur field (Sample 3348-3-4). Results of chemical analysis confirm the data on mineral composition." @default.
