- W1160520685 abstract "Particles containing green authigenic clay minerals are common in the sedimentary record. This chapter reviews the available information on the nature and distribution of green particles in recent marine sediments. It discusses the verdissement process by which they form and describes their geological significance. The study of green particles from the marine environment has played an important role in the understanding of mechanisms of clay genesis. Three main types of green particles occur: verdine, glaucony, and chlorite. Verdine consists of the authigenic phyllite. The mineral is essentially ferric and is equally dipctahedral and trioctahedral, neither character being normally associated with serpentine or chlorite. Although verdine does not show a recognizable mineralogical evolution, progressive changes in color, morphology, and paramagnetic behavior occur. Glaucony grains are characterized by a variety of authigenic minerals, which have in common a 2: 1 structure, a high potassium content, and a ferric nature. They form a continuous family termed the “glauconitic minerals.” Chlorite is characterized by two sharp peaks at 14 and 7 Å, representing the original substrate." @default.
