- W116119605 abstract "Printing is one major use of paper. Also, many paper converting operations include printing. Printing is often defined as “the use of ink to transfer an image on a substrate such as paper”; it implies the generation of a “large” number of reproductions. The various methods of printing high numbers of reproductions center on the plate which carries the image to be printed. Plates may carry type, pictures, or both. The purpose of the plate is to transfer the ink in the form of an image to the paper to give a clear copy of the image of interest. Three possible geometries are available and define the basic processes of letterpress, raised printing surface; lithography, printing and nonprinting surfaces that are in the same plane; and gravure. The fourth main geometry is used in screen printing, which uses a stencil or porous plate. Other types of printing methods include electrophotocopy, laser printing, inkjet printers, and thermal printers. There are some other important considerations in printing. Dot gain represents the increase in dot size from the plate to the printed image. Dot gain is a function of the size of the dot to be printed and often is greatest in the midtones; this function is called a dot gain curve. Dot distortion refers to a round dot being printed unevenly. These are a function of the amount of ink used to print, paper characteristics, and other factors." @default.
