- W1162079594 abstract "While the generation of the perhydroxyl (HO2) and superoxide (O2-) radicals by UV photolysis (380–200 nm) of hydrogen peroxide has been the subject of numerous studies, the generation of these species by vacuum-UV (VUV, λ < 180 nm) photolysis of water in presence of appropriate scavengers has not been fully explored for practical uses until recently. Although kinetic and spectral studies of HO2/O2- by flash photolysis of peroxide solutions proved quite successful at pH below 8, the presence of high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in such studies may not always yield unequivocal results because of possible side reactions. Therefore, overall studies on the properties of HO2/O2- are best carried out at as low hydrogen peroxide as is experimentally feasible. A recently developed technique for the preparation of alkaline (pH 11–13) superoxide solutions, which is both simple and versatile, utilizes primary radicals H and OH produced by the decomposition of water by VUV light." @default.
