- W1162660571 abstract "It has recently been confirmed that there is considerable variability in functional-anatomical parameters while studying human hypothalamic nuclei using a combination of immunocytochemistry and morphometrics. However, this variability is not necessarily of a disturbing nature. Quite the reverse: it may bear important functional information. The variability of data on the human brain may become an increasingly useful tool in research on the relationship between structure and function. Data is presented on the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the human hypothalamus, a small structure (0.25 mm3) on top of the optic chiasm. It is one of the few brain structures for which a main function is known. The SCN generates and coordinates circadian rhythms. It is not possible to reliably localize the SCN in conventionally stained human brain sections, but it shows up clearly following the staining of its peptidergic neurotransmitters—for example, vasopressin (VP) or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). These peptides are stable in postmortem material. The number of SCN neurons expressing them varies widely in relation to age, sex, and the stage of rhythms providing information on the functional involvement of the SCN in these processes." @default.
