- W1163061091 abstract "This chapter discusses the measurement of the effect of interferons on the cloning efficiency of primary tumor cells in culture. The biological properties initially associated with interferons are their antiviral activities, but they are subsequently shown to have antiproliferative effects against a variety of cell types, both in vitro and in vivo . To evaluate the antiproliferative activity of natural and recombinant human interferons in a model that might prove predictive of clinical antitumor response, the human tumor clonogenic assay (HTCA) is utilized on fresh biopsies obtained from cancer patients. HTCA has previously been applied to chemosensitivity testing with standard cytotoxic anticancer drugs and found to be predictive of clinical response in cancer patients. The assay has been applied to in vitro phase II testing of a variety of new anticancer drugs. The results of in vitro studies suggest that both natural and recombinant interferons tested have antitumor activity against a variety of human cancers but may differ somewhat in their potency and specificity for tumors of differing histologic origin." @default.
