- W1163535722 abstract "Abstract Fructose is a monosaccharide, a naturally occurring sugar with the sweetest taste among the dietary sugars. This chapter describes the nutritional characteristics of fructose compared with glucose and sucrose, and focuses on the scientific evidence substantiating the authorised EU health claim for fructose that ‘the consumption of foods containing fructose leads to a lower blood glucose rise compared with foods containing sucrose or glucose’. The specific metabolic characteristics of fructose have resulted in a positive scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority ( EFSA, 2011 ), supporting the authorisation of a health claim under Article 13(1) of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation ( European Parliament and Council, 2006 ). The European Commission authorised the claim in 2013 as a generic health claim and defined the conditions of use. The claim can be applied to foods and beverages, provided that at least 30% of glucose and/or sucrose has been replaced by fructose. The target population, according to EFSA, is individuals who wish to reduce their postprandial glycaemic response. This claim was authorised for use as from 2 January 2014." @default.
