- W116591294 abstract "The development of information and communication technologies allowing quick access to data and information sources and reliable means of sharing research played an important role in encouraging comparative cross-national research. As a result, it is more possible to think of a “comparative urban research agenda” than in the past when urban scholars turned to their own setting, with all its peculiarities, as a feasible and affordable research arena. In the absence of significant funding for cross-national comparative urban research, until recently most comparative projects relied on the entrepreneurial efforts of individual scholars and the good will and internal subsidies provided by colleagues sharing this intellectual interest. The Fiscal Austerity and Urban Innovation (FAUI) project launched by Terry Clark in 1982 exemplifies these early efforts: the original US-based survey was conducted by faculty and students using access to “free” phone services to conduct over 1400 municipal interviews with mayors, council members, and administrators in all 50 states using a common research design and standardized protocol. Through panels at international conferences, this project disseminated to over 38 countries with the protocol being adjusted for local contexts. A database on 10,000 local governments is now available free of charge to any urban scholars interested in comparative analyses." @default.
