- W116787854 abstract "A multicultural environment is crucial in the business school setting. Business students at a state university were surveyed to determine whether they had participated in any college activities that involved interactions with people of different cultures and if so, which ones. If was found that nontraditional students were interacting less with people from diverse cultures than traditional students. It was also found that students predominantly interacted with those of other cultures through activities of clubs and Greek organizations. Eight recommendations are made to help nontraditional students' chances for interactions with diverse groups. No one concerned with business and/or business education can ignore the growing significance of cultural and demographic factors in the conduct of business. The workplace is becoming increasingly diverse due to the inclusion of women and employees from various races, cultures, abilities, and sexual orientations. The question of how business students can learn to function in a diverse workforce when the culture of most business schools continues to be predominantly white, middle class, and male is a difficult task, but failing to do so may prove disastrous. According to Lutzker (1995), excuses for excluding issues of multiculturalism from the curriculum include time and room in the curriculum, instructor's lack of knowledge of the subject matter, fear of resentment if he or she does not belong to a minority group, and belief that students are better served by specialized courses such as ethnic studies and women's studies. Despite these objections, we must acknowledge that multiculturalism is a crucial educational issue--and especially so for business majors, whose livelihoods may well depend on their success in navigating other cultures and dealing with people of different backgrounds. In order to analyze the frequency of multicultural contact among students, we surveyed 295 business students at a state university. The students were asked the following question: Have you participated in any college activities that involved interactions with people of different cultures; if so, which ones? Of those 295 students that answered this question, 196 (66.4%) answered no, while only 99 (33.6%) answered yes. We then tried to determine which students were saying yes or no. We found that part-time students, students older than 23, students who work more than 30 hours a week, and students with high GPA's are less likely to interact with people of diverse cultures. These categories indicate that nontraditional students are less likely to seek out multicultural experiences, since many of the same students fall into most or all of these categories--i.e., the older student is more likely to be working more than 30 hours a week and therefore attending classes part-time. (The category of high GPA may simply reflect the isolated nature of academic work.) Our conclusion that nontraditional students were interacting less with people from diverse cultures seems substantiated by the second part of the question. Students who answered yes to our question listed various ways they interacted with people of different cultures. Only five categories account for 92% of the responses: clubs, sports, Greek programs, residence life and student government activities. These activities are usually associated with traditional students; thus our survey indicates that multicultural efforts must be specifically targeted to include nontraditional students. Most likely our findings would apply to business schools at other institutions as well. The purpose of this paper is to explore means and ways to enhance multiculturalism for nontraditional students in the classroom. Following are eight recommendations which practically any business school could adopt in order to improve the nontraditional student's chances for interactions with diverse groups of students. …" @default.
