- W1168761028 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of yeast cell cycle. The cycle in budding yeasts starts with a single unbudded cell. Bud enlargement continues through the cycle, although there is some evidence of a slowing down of the volume increase toward the end of the cycle. DNA synthesis takes place in about the first quarter of the cycle. Nuclear division and the migration of a nucleus into the bud happen relatively slowly in midcycle. The G 2 period is short but there is an appreciable G 1 period at the end of the cycle. G 2 precedes G 1 in the cell cycle because the G 1 –S–G 2 sequence must start and finish at nuclear division and not at cell division. Fission yeasts grow only in length, and a cell nearly doubles its length during the first three-quarters of the cycle. Thereafter, the length and volume stay constant, while a cell plate (or septum) forms across the middle of the cell. Nuclear division happens at the end of the third quarter of the cycle, and DNA is replicated at the time of cell division. In contrast with budding yeasts, fission yeasts have a different mode of growth, faster nuclear division, a shorter G 1 , and a longer G 2 ." @default.
