- W117008151 abstract "This chapter discusses the clinical features and genetics of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and myasthenia gravis. It also highlights that several viruses may have the ability to produce MS, probably by inducing an auto-immune response which leads to the breakdown of myelin. Another factor is likely to be sex, as females are more often affected than males, have more recurrences, and have a peak incidence at a younger age. Other factors are likely to be related to human leukocyte antigen complex as genes here are often involved in diseases with disordered immunity. The chapter discusses that congenital myasthenia gravis that occur before the age of two can be distinguished from the acquired types that occur later in life for clinical and genetic reasons, and because they are not associated with the presence in the serum of antibodies to acetylcholine receptors. Transitory neonatal myasthenia gravis is also a distinct condition that affects about 12% of babies born to myasthenic mothers and it is because of placental transfer of maternal antibodies to acetylcholine receptors." @default.
