- W117025178 abstract "This chapter discusses the changes that are induced by stress in the activity of the serotoninergic system in limbic brain structures. Studies show that immobilization for 3 hours or 6 hours caused a depletion of serotonin (5-HT) content of the whole brain. Prolonged tumbling stress decreased the hypothalamic 5-HT content. Electric shock applied for 3 hours, or swimming until exhaustion, increased the 5-HT level, 5-HT turnover, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid content in the brain. Experiments were carried out to clarify the action of different stresses on serotonin metabolism of the brain in correlation with the stress-induced changes in the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal function. There is a reciprocal correlation between the serotoninergic system and pituitary-adrenal axis. The serotoninergic system exerts an inhibitory role in the function of the pituitary-adrenal axis. During stress, this inhibition is diminished, and the increased plasma corticosterone level restores the hypothalamic serotonin content and in this way strengthens the inhibition. This also suggests that serotonin might play a role in the negative feedback action of corticosteroids." @default.
