- W1171489797 abstract "The brain possesses a remarkable capacity for change, a process known as neuroplasticity. In primary motor cortex, use-dependent plasticity manifests as an effector-specific increase in cortical excitability. This can be quantified by the amplitude of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) following transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the cortical representation of the trained muscle. How neuroplasticity is consolidated over prolonged timescales remains unknown, though non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep is important for consolidating usedependent plasticity. NREM sleep is characterised by slow oscillations (0.50–4.50 Hz) in neuronal membrane potential. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been used to boost slow oscillations during NREM sleep, with subsequent effects on memory recall, suggesting a causal role for slow oscillations in neuroplasticity consolidation. The current study aimed to assess whether the entrainment of 2 Hz slow oscillations (validated by electroencephalography) during wakefulness can enhance consolidation of use-dependent plasticity (i.e., by prolonging training-related MEP increases). Across three experimental sessions, a ballistic thumb abduction task was used to induce short-term changes in corticomotor excitability. Each within-participant (N = 11) session differed only in the type of tACS delivered after motor training (sham, 2 Hz, or 19 Hz). Consolidation of MEP amplitude was examined at five-minute intervals for 30 minutes post-tACS. At the group level, motor training failed to induce an immediate increase in corticomotor excitability, though a significant training-related effect was evident approximately 20 minutes later. No reliable differences in MEP amplitude or frequency-specific entrainment by tACS were observed between conditions. The trends observed in these data suggest an underpowered sample. The paradigm used for inducing corticomotor neuroplasticity and the timing, duration, and focality of tACS for entraining neural oscillations are discussed in the context of future research." @default.
