A Practical Approach to Everyday Morality, John Kekes analyzes nine modes of Kantian idealist moral philosophy, each via story about conflicts of a real person living a real and ordinary life. His purpose is to show that the history of ideal theories ... is history of very intelligent people banging their very learned heads against a very solid wall. He begins his analysis by considering work of Thomas Nagel, who posits an absolutist morality based upon rational universality and necessity: The correct morality will always have a preponderance of reasons on its side, even though it needn't coincide with good because impersonal moralities with universal pretensions ... derive their content from a view of one's own actions sub specie aetemitatis. Kekes asks why we should accept a duty to adhere to a universal principle rather than pursue what is actually good for us. Next considered is Christine M. Korsgaard's position: there is only one principle of practical reason, categorical imperative viewed as law of autonomy.... An agent is autonomous when her movements are in some clear sense self-determined. Kekes denies that all who disagree with this singular view are necessarily unreasonable or immoral, and he considers this definition of morality to require an impossible degree of constant self-reflection. Harry G. Frankfurt's ideal of reflective self-evaluation extends importance of autonomy to include willful inner necessity. Kekes observes that fulfilling our inner necessity may not be most important thing in life: Is it credible that [a] Dutiful Man who voluntarily carries a heavy burden of responsibilities and does as well as he can by his family, job, and life really fails to be a person, free, and morally responsible? Frankfort later extended his argument by claiming that the authority of practical reason is less fundamental than that of love. Kekes observes: But we can love unwisely and too well. Charles Taylor similarly pursues importance of inner necessity in establishing morality, but for him inner necessity is not merely a matter of willful preference; it is grounded in human nature. Kekes notes that demand that we listen to a naturalistic inner voice is but a form of monomania. Kekes next addresses narrative-based ideal theory.
