- W117635950 abstract "IN THOSE EARLY DAYS of audiolingualism during which we conditioned students to produce correct responses to spoken stimuli, the prevailing view was that oral language practice should be kept error-free if' at all possible. Brooks, a leading proponent of' this methodology, wrote that error bore a relationship to learning resembling that of' sin to virtue and went on to suggest that the principal way to overcome error was to shorten the time lapse between the incorrect response and the presentation of' the correct model.' This procedure of dealing with error was further developed by the authors of' the Teacher's Manual of the Audio-Lingual Materials. Going beyond Brooks, these specialists stated that the student who made a mistake should repeat the correct model two or three times. In difficult cases, the teacher was advised to ask for a choral and individual model before returning to the student who made the original mistake. Hesitation was to be treated similarly: Whenever a student hesitates, either to begin or complete a sentence, supply a correct model for immediate imitation. 'Fumbling' is bad practice, both for the fumbler and for the other students.2 For teacher trainers, this was a relatively easy skill to pass on. With a minimum of' practice, the novice was able to imitate the consistent and automatic reaction to error illustrated for him by his model teacher. Unfortunately, teachers trained in this procedure were seldom, if ever, made aware that language learners fail to respond correctly for a variety of' reasons which may, and in fact should be dealt with in a variety of ways. The emphasis at that time was on the form rather than on the content of students' remarks in the foreign language, on how they were speaking rather than on what they were saying. The role of trial-and-error in language learning was completely denied. A shift in emphasis seems to be occurring now, and it is evident that the highly complex task of helping students express themselves in a foreign language requires a less simplistic, more sophisticated approach to the correction of errors. The partially self-instructional program described below was designed to meet this need. While the program was tested with students in an" @default.
